Bleached Knots vs Unbleached Knots

Bleached Knots vs. Unbleached Knots: What’s the Difference?

When choosing a wig, you may come across the term “bleached knots.” This refers to a technique used on human hair lace wigs to make the wig look more natural. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide whether bleached or unbleached knots are right for you.

What Are Knots?

Each strand of hair is tied by hand onto the lace of the wig. These ties are called knots. On unbleached wigs, the knots can appear as tiny dark dots along the lace. Bleaching lightens these knots to make them less visible, giving the illusion that the hair is growing directly from your scalp.

Pros of Bleached Knots

  • More Natural Hairline - Bleached knots blend into the lace, creating a realistic “scalp effect.”
  • Seamless Styling - Especially useful when parting your wig or wearing it in up-styles.
  • Less Makeup Needed - You won’t need as much foundation or powder to disguise the knots.

Cons of Bleached Knots

  • Reduced Durability - Bleaching weakens the knots, which may lead to shedding over time.
  • Colour Limitation - Works best on darker hair colours; on blonde or light wigs, knots are already less noticeable.
  • Maintenance Required - The bleached effect can fade, sometimes needing touch-ups.

Pros of Unbleached Knots

  • Stronger & Longer Lasting - Since the knots aren’t chemically processed, they’re more durable and resist shedding.
  • Better for Longevity - Ideal if you want your wig to last as long as possible.
  • Great for Light Colours - On blonde, light brown, or highlighted wigs, unbleached knots are already less visible.

Cons of Unbleached Knots

  • Visible Dots - Dark knots can show through the lace, especially on darker hair wigs.
  • Less Natural Appearance - May require makeup or lace tinting for a seamless look.

Our Tip:
If you prioritise a super natural hairline and don’t mind a little extra care, bleached knots are a great choice and are essentially only necessary for dark coloured human hair wigs.

If you want maximum durability and don’t mind using a bit of lace tint or makeup, unbleached knots may suit you better. It is super easy to apply a bit of light powder or makeup on the lace to reduce the visibility of knots.
